Are you looking for ways to train for your next race event? I’m sure you’ve heard of the bike trainer or any ol’ exercise bike, but have you ever tried using a bike roller?

Well, you’re at the right place. 

Rollers are brilliant when training for a race, but they’re also brilliant for any kind of cyclist. Unlike stationary trainers, where your bike is immobile, you have to balance while pedaling with rollers. 

This gives the same feeling of riding a real bike as the slightest imbalance may cause the rider to fall, just like in real biking. 

Now, let me tell you something. 

Using bike rollers is a brilliant way to build up for a race as it allows you to have the same feeling of riding intensely on the road without having to leave the house.

So what are rollers, and why are they beneficial for racers? 

Bike rollers are a brilliant piece of equipment for building up your cycling skill and endurance.

They operate fairly simply; the cyclist climbs onto the saddle and pumps the pedals; the pedals then turn the rear wheel which spins on the rear rollers, driving the brand, which will spin the front roller.

Nothing holds the rider on top of the rollers except the force exerted by the wheels against the rollers, focusing on form and extreme balance.

They work by improving improper pedaling, flailing upper body, poor steering as if you get one of these wrongs; you will fall off the roller– very embarrassing.

Despite it being quite tricky to ride at first, it will massively improve a rider’s skills, especially a racer. They work by finely tuning their balance, which is essential for drafting and closing a peloton during races.

When the rainy, snowy season comes, this is the worst time for racers as they cannot get out of the house to ride– either the road is unsafe, or it just won’t stop raining, not fun.

While bike trainers are brilliant for keeping endurance up and improving strength and speed, they have nothing on rollers. Rollers focus on balance and efficient steering, pedaling, and balance.

Cyclists will also remove any sharp or dangerous from the area and will ALWAYS wear a helmet to prevent the chance of any accidents and hurting themselves.

Construction of bike rollers: 

Bike rollers often have a simplistic and general design; they are three cylindrical drums placed on axles inside the rectangular frame.

The two drums support the back wheel while the third supports the front wheel; they cannot get to the back and front with a rubber belt.

They are often lifted around 2 inches above the ground to turn without being disturbed by the floor.

To mimic the road’s true feelings, rollers use a fluid or magnetic resistance attachment to ride the road’s true feelings.

The roller frames are often constructed with steel or aluminum, the belt is made from rubber, and the drums are made from PVC or aluminum.

PVC is often the more budget-friendly option, but they tend to be less durable and require regular replacement after a certain number of miles, while aluminum is usually maintenance-free.

They can cost as little as $170, but they can cost as much as $1000, depending on the model, quality, and materials. They’re usually fairly lightweight and weigh between 20-30lbs.

Most drums are straight all the way across, but some manufacturers produce rollers that concave, hourglass shape to make driving off the rollers less likely.

They had come a long way since the 1800s when they were first invented and massively aid racers and all kinds of riders over the world.

Racing with bike rollers: 

Between seasons racers tend to use bike rollers when they cannot get out on the road, whether the weather is bad, they have a busy schedule, or just they run out of daylight hours to go out.

Rollers remove street racing variables and allow a controlled environment that is perfect for certain training protocols. It allows for bursts of pedaling as fast as possible without variables such as hitting a hill or a stop sign.

While it is brilliant for racing, roller training’s main benefit is that it develops the correct pedaling technique and form essential for road racing.

It allows the rider to generate constant power throughout every pedal stroke.

This clean technique also helps with upper body stability and building the core and abdominal muscles. Cyclists who pedal in squares tend to bounce off the saddle, which is not a good form to have, and the rollers prevent this.

But even the strongest and most advanced riders struggle with rollers at first as it may go against the pedaling they know, but with some practice, their form will improve, and they’ll become a better rider.

Bike rollers teach riders to stop flailing and pedaling efficiently, which massively improves any rider, not just racers.

This improved form, steering, and pedal efficiency is translated in race seasons, with faster finishing times, staying at the front of the pack, and improved cycling.
