Best Bike for 2 Year Olds Buyers Guide
Your little ones’ first bike is one they’ll never forget; whether it’s a Christmas or birthday present, you won’t be able to get them off their bike once they’ve got started! In addition, 2-year-olds are at the stage where they become more curious about the world around them as they walk more and more.
Balance bikes or tricycles are brilliant first bikes. Balance bikes help teach your kid how to balance and steer and keep themselves upright. At the same time, tricycles are a brilliant introduction to the pedals and following a natural pedal motion.
There are many factors to consider when choosing a bike for your 2-year-old as they are only just getting the idea of walking by themselves and becoming independent; safety is a top priority to make learning how to use their first bike fun.
But don’t worry Mom and Dad, I’m here to guide you through; let’s go through everything you need to know!
Different Types Of Bikes For Two-Year-Olds:
When searching for a bike for a two-year-old, you’ll come across two main common bikes, tricycles and balance bikes. Unfortunately, your little one is a bit too young to have training wheels, so the tricycle is the next best thing. But which one is best?
Balance Bikes: Balance bikes are just as they sound; they are bikes without pedals. These bikes are designed to help children learn how to balance, coordinate and steer a bike; this makes the transition to pedal bikes much easier.
Instead of using pedals, your child will use their feet to push the bike and get up speed. There are also no drivetrain, no chain, no gears, no shifters, no freewheel; you get the idea. I personally prefer teaching on a balance bike over stabilizers/training wheels as it builds up your child’s balance without wrecking their confidence in the process.
Training bikes teach kids how to ride while unbalanced while balance bike teaches kids how to ride and balance. Training wheeled bikes tend to tilt to one side, giving a false sense of balance. As a result, it is much more difficult to learn how to ride unbalanced to balanced.
Tricycles: Tricycles are similar to training wheels, but they provide much more stability as the wheels are bigger at the back rather than two tiny training wheels beside a big wheel. These bikes have 3 wheels (if you haven’t already guessed).
These kinds of bikes are extremely durable, super easy to ride, and can even be controlled by parents; some come with a handle at the back to help push your child. For a 2-year-old, it is probably the best choice as they may not have the ability to use a balance bike yet.
While balance bikes are brilliant for teaching children how to balance independently, some 2-year-olds may struggle if they don’t have any experience; it is controlled by your child pushing their feet on the floor.
Before choosing the style of bike, I would recommend reviewing your child’s ability; you want their experience to be as fun and as easy as possible, which is also why I don’t recommend bikes with training wheels as it can knock their confidence and make them scared to ride a bike.
But it shouldn’t be a huge worry as balance bikes and tricycles are real confidence boosters as they’re straightforward to use, and with a few rides, your little one will be more confident than ever!
What Is The Best Bike Size For A 2 Year Old?
You may be wondering what size is best for a 2-year-old and how you should measure your little one to get the vest size, and trust me, you’re not the only parent who struggles with this. Finding the best bike for your 2-year-old is all about their size and height.
The best way to measure your little one is to get them to stand up against a wall with their legs together and their heels touching the wall, so they’re flat against the wall. Then place a hardback book between their legs just under the crotch with the spine facing up.
You should then measure the length between the parallel spine of the book in between your kid’s legs to the floor; this is a good way to work out how high your frame should be as this is where they will be sitting when riding their bike.
You need to be sure that your little one can reach the floor comfortably or reach the pedals (if you’re planning on getting a trike). I would also recommend you do this when your little one has shoes on for a more accurate representation of when they use the bike.
Also, remember to compare this to your child’s height; I would recommend going for a bike where the lowest seat point is just below what your measurement should be so the bike can efficiently grow with your child as they grow. This means you’ll get the most out of their bike.
If your child is taller/shorter than average, here is a rough guide for you to work out what size bike you should be looking for!
|10 inches||1.5 – 2||2’0 – 3″||12-14″ or 30-35 cm|
|12 inches||2 – 3||2’10 – 3’4″||14-17″ or 35-42 cm|
|14 inches||3 – 4||3’1 – 3’7″||16-20” or 40-50 cm|
Things To Consider When Buying A Bike For A 2-Year-Old
When I compiled our list of the best bikes for 2-year-old kids, we checked various features to ensure that our products are indeed the best. Some of the things we checked are;
Safety: It is not easy for 2-year-old kids to learn how to ride since they are not strong enough to ride independently. This means that you should look for a bike that is safe and easy to use.
You will find that the above bikes come with different safety features like footbrake, dual rear wheel, push handle, among others. Balance bikes and tricycles are among the safest bikes for your little one when they start; they teach balance and introduce them to the pedals.
Building your little ones’ confidence safely is the best way to make learning to ride a bike more enjoyable for you and your kid.
Durability: It is also important you check the materials used to construct the bike. The materials used should be able to withstand all the harshness of learning how to ride.
The learning process is usually tough, and it is normal for your kid to hit trees, walls, or other obstacles; and this means that the bike should be strong enough to withstand all forms of abuse. Learning to ride a bike can also be frustrating so having a bike that can withstand toddler temper tantrums is important too.
Most wheels are either made with foam or filled with air in a puncture-proof casing; now, while foam tires are extremely durable air-filled tires provide more smooth rolling and offer the same feel as the real thing, which helps with the transition.
Comfort: The best bikes for 2-year-old kids should be comfortable and convenient. When buying, you need to check the seat and handlebars to ensure that the one you have picked will be very comfortable for your kid.
All the bikes on my list are very comfortable, and they also come with adjustable parts, which means that you won’t need to buy a new bike every year. I have even included bikes that focus on using kid-specific geometry to enhance ultimate comfort.
Design: The best bikes for 2-year-old kids should be very stylish. You will find that all the bikes we have reviewed are the most attractive in the market. They also come in different designs and colors, which gives you a variety of options to choose from.
Now while your kid is at the age of two, they may not care too much about the design, but as they grow, the girls will want a prettier bike while the boys want one that looks cool to show off to all their friends at kindergarten when they get to the age of 4/5– it’s important to consider this.
Safety Tips to Consider
Even though cycling is a fun and healthy exercise for kids, it can be very risky and dangerous. However, the following tips will enhance the safety of our kid when cycling.
- Always ensure that the kid is wearing a helmet when cycling.
- You should also ensure that bike has stabilizer wheels or training wheels for balance.
- Children are likely to fall which means that you need to ensure that they are using knee and elbow pads to prevent bruises or bad injuries.
- Ensure that the bike is in good condition for the best performance.
- It is also good to educate our kid on various parts of the bike and how they work. Give them tips on how to handle themselves when cycling.
Frequently asked Questions

Kids can use a bike when they are around 18 months or 2 years old. However, they should start with tricycles or bikes with training wheels because they are more comfortable and safer to use.
