Best BMX bikes for kids: what you need to know

There are a couple of things that can be different when you want to buy a BMX bicycle versus a regular bike, especially if it’s for kids. Here are some points to look out for if you want to get the find the best BMX bikes:

Cranks- Since BMX bikes are mostly used for freestyling and doing tricks, BMX bikes are usually one speed, so its the crank that will play a bigger role in balancing weight, and controlling speed and agility.

If you’re on a lower budget, you can get a single-piece crankset, however that might mean less quality in terms of metal and bearings.

Ideally, for BMX bikes, you should get a three-piece crankset with individual components- crank arms, spindle, and bearing races. That’s more likely to be better in quality and forged with stronger metal than a single piece.

Spokes- BMX bikes for kids often come in a range of wheel sizes, for example, 16inch or 18inch wheels, depending on the size of your bike.

When it comes to wheelsets though, the more spokes you have the greater strength, which is particularly useful when doing tricks and freestyling on your BMX. In general, if your BMX bike is mostly for racing the streets, then being lightweight is key and you’re likely to have 20h rims.

If your kid is eager to try some tricks at the skateboard park, their BMX needs strength and that’s why you’ll see 32h or 36h rims so the wheel can handle the drop.

Tip- if your kid is more into street riding and doing tricks, then a greater spoke count will prevent them having to straighten their wheels too often. If you want a faster, more responsive bike, then fewer spokes mean less weight but you may need to adjust your wheels regularly.

Material-Most BMX bikes are either have a steel or aluminum frame, specifically Chromoly. Although mountain bikes and road bikes will often have an aluminum frame, you’ll find that a lot more BMX are made from steel instead.

The advantage to steel BMX frame is its strength. Sure, it might add a little weight, but when your kid is flying through the air doing a flip at the skateboard park and street, what they really need is a bike that won’t crumple from the fall. That’s what we call impact resistance.

An aluminum frame may have a lower weight, but it doesn’t have the resilience to crash damage that steel has, meaning it’s more likely to deform and bend if you do tricks on it. Plus, when it comes to repairing your bike from a crash, an aluminum frame is much more costly.

Go for a stronger frame even if it means added weight, the weight won’t bother you when it comes to doing tricks. you can also modify other parts such as the seat to remove extra weight

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you ride a BMX long distances?

In general, people tend to use BMXs for doing tricks and stunts, or for going off to the skatepark, so they’re usually built quite strong. They’re not ideal for longer distances as they simply won’t be comfortable for example just the seat itself is harder and smaller so it wouldn’t be convenient for long hours sitting on a BMX seat, you’d be better off getting a regular bike with a wider seat. They’re not very fast either, it’s better to go for a road bike if that’s what you’re looking for.

What age is a 16 inch BMX bike for?

A BMX with a frame size of 16 inch is best for younger kids such as a 6 year old or an 8 year old. If you have a child who is older for instance a 13 year old, then a 20 inch or more size bike is better. However, even if your child is a 12 year old, most of the time its just a question of preference and how tall your child is compared with the average kids.

What’s the difference between BMX bikes and regular bikes?

BMX bikes are specifically made for people who enjoy doing stunts, jumps, going to the skateboard park, and general urban riding. They’re usually built for strength for absorbing crash impact.

Road bikes can have different frames and are mostly made for speed or commuting into town, so they’ll also have slimmer smaller inch tires and are lighter.

Mountain bikes will tend to have thicker, tires for more grip and are designed for riding on trails and on tougher terrain. Usually, both road bikes and mountain bikes are equipped with more gears than on a BMX.

Why is a BMX seat so low?

There are several reasons why the seat is so low. The main reason is that having a lower seat allows more clearance for stunts and acrobatic body movements, especially for bunny hops and other tricks in the air, so the rider can go over the seat and handlebars more easily.

Final Thoughts

There are so many different types of BMX bikes for kids that it can be confusing to find the right one for your child, especially for younger cyclists. You can find some BMX bikes for kids by checking out factors such as material durability, ease of use, weight and type to suit your needs.

No matter the price or the age of the rider, every child should be able to get their very own BMX. Opt for one of these options for BMX bikes for kids to find the best one for your child, whether you want features such as different bmx frame size, a 3 piece crank or a one piece crank, bigger tires, a 16 inch frame or a rear u brake, you can find one perfect for racing down those streets.
