BMX buyers guide

BMX bikes are used for heavy-duty stunt riding and rely on 20-inch wheels and wide tires in order to pull off the best of tricks. The small nature of the bike makes it very agile and capable of jumps.

But I’m sure you already know this and wanna get onto the good stuff, the upgrades!

When searching for street tires it is important to find one that suits you riding style the best, whether you’re a freestyle rider, or stunt rider as its all well and good finding a quality bike tire but it’s useless if it doesn’t fit your style.

With so many things to check it can often be tedious and sometimes a challenge- we’ve all been there.

But the top two things to check is the PSI and whether it’ll fit onto your wheels but also the grip and tread are massive factors to consider as they will help you choose considering your riding style.

But in this guide, we will work together, and firstly let’s go through things you should check before clicking buy.

What to look for when buying BMX street tires?

Grip – The most important thing when it comes to BMX street tires is obviously the grip. If you do not have a good grip, your tires will slip and create very dangerous situations you do not want to be in. Look out for a good grippy tire rating when buying street tires for your ride. Little rubber spikes and patterns also help the tire with grip.

Low riding resistance – You want the least resistance when riding your BMX bike. Riding resistance is something you are bound to experience but some tires do a great job at reducing it to a crawl. Look for tires that are certified for low riding resistance as it will provide a smooth riding experience and improve the overall quality of your bike rides.

Good pressure rating – You will find many tires that state good pressure ratings like an upwards of 65psi but beware as not all of them will live up to what they claim. If you have a high-pressure rating for your tire, it is more likely to improve the longevity of the bike, is more likely to withstand high pressures, and will also improve the durability of the tire.

Rims – Good quality rims say a lot about a tire. From just looking good to actually providing a strong and long-lasting experience, good rims can be your saving grace at tough times. They provide much needed structural integrity to your bike and the rubber tires that are on them as well.

Material- When looking for street tires it is important to check the quality of rubber just as they’re better for reducing the impact of wear and tear.

What’s the difference? -BMX vs road tires

Different riding styles often have different designs and manufacturing on their tires. With mountain bike tires you will need to have a lot more grip, especially on unpredictable terrain therefore the tires are nobbly to maximum grip and traction on rough environments.

Similar to gravel bike tires, they need to ensure maximum grip for off-road rides. Gravel bike tires also need to be puncture-resistant especially when faced with unpredictable roads and terrains.

Road bikes have much thinner tires with low tread as it allows you to go faster, they are often super lightweight so they can minimize air resistance and give maximum performance.

But what’s the difference?

The difference between road and BMX tires isn’t much but BMX tires are much more durable because essentially they are street and pavement pounders therefore they need to hold up a lot more abuse than an ordinary road tire.

Different BMX tires have different treads in order to match the style you’re looking for in order to get the maximum performance out of your tricks and stunts.

Does it matter what BMX tire you get and can you use it for all your riding styles?

Does it matter? Could I just pick up a random highly rated BMX tire and call it a day?

Well no.

Like all tires, BMX tires come in a wide range of designs and constructions and therefore you will need different tires if you have multiple BMX riding styles.

So if you’re here for street tires you should look for tires that are at least 2.1 inches wide as they’re used to absorb high impacts and give you that smoother grip while pulling off tricks.

What is the best psi for BMX street tires?
A proper tire pressure lets your bike roll quickly, ride smoothly, and avoid flats. For street tires, I would recommend a PSI between 40 and 70 for a smoother ride but always check with the manufacturers of that tire.

Does BMX tire width matter?
Wider tires give you more control and balance while riding.

How often should I pump my bike tires?
How often you pump your tires depends on the tire size and how much pressure is required. High-pressure tires should be pumped up at least once a week, hybrid tires every 2 weeks, and mountain tires at least every 2 to 3 weeks.

How much are BMX street tires?

You will often find high-quality BMX street tires for under $100 but be careful with ones with a super cheap price tag, they may not last as long as the ones you pay more for.

What do BAR and PSI Mean on BMX Tires?

BAR- the metric option, it stands for bars of pressure. One BAR is the pressure of the atmosphere at sea level and 14.7 PSI is equivalent to one BAR.

To put it simply, having 1 bar of pressure in your bike tires is equal to having the same pressure of the Earth’s atmosphere.

BMX is a much-loved sport worldwide and people are very passionate about it. It is crucial to have a proper riding experience, enabled through a good set of street tires.

The manufacturers we looked at today provided us with the best grip and low riding resistance they possibly could. Some had funky colors to choose from while others had foldable beads. All tires have good quality and are very durable.

No matter which one you go for, you will have a grand experience.
