Key things to check when buying the best cheap road bikes
Even though road bikes are the most popular bikes on the market, finding a good one when you are on a tight budget can be very difficult. To make your work easier I have outlined some basic features you should check when buying.
Material– There are 4 types of materials that are used to make road bikes. These materials are steel, aluminum titanium, and carbon fiber. Titanium and carbon fiber bikes are the most expensive which means that they are not the best if you are on a budget.
In terms of durability and strength, steel frames are the best. However, these bikes are very heavy and prone to rusting. Aluminum bikes are the most preferred due to their lightweight design. They are also affordable, strong, and resistant to rusting, unlike steel.
Size– Buying a road bike that suits your height is another crucial thing. Otherwise, you may never enjoy your rides due to discomfort. Before buying, you need to check the sizing chart provided by the manufacturer to ensure that you are investing in the correct size.
Speed– The good thing about road bikes is that even the cheap ones are good for speed. You should pick a bike with an aerodynamic profile because these bikes are designed to cut through the air without much resistance.
Wheels– The wheels of many cheap road bikes are made of aluminum. The good thing about this material is that it is not only durable but also lightweight. You also need to check the quality of the tires to ensure that they will provide the required grip and traction.
Brakes– The two types of brake systems used in road bikes are the V-brakes and disc brakes. In terms of performance, disk brakes are stronger than V brakes. However, V-brakes are lighter than disc brakes and are also easy to install.
Groupsets- A road bike’s groupset refers to any mechanical or electronic part that is involved in braking, changing gear, or running the drivetrain. It includes shifters, brake levers, front and rear brake calipers, front and rear derailleurs, crankset, bottom bracket, chain, and cassette.
A bike with a complete groupset is good because all these features will all be the same color and share other visual features. More importantly, the quality will all be alike so you can expect them all to be a similar level of durability.
Mudguards- Riding in the winter without a mudguard is a recipe for disaster, getting to work caked in mud but mudguards aren’t just good for keeping your clothes clean, they are also good for keeping you dry and warm.
What’s more annoying? Getting covered in mud or being wet and cold for the rest of the day? With a mudguard, the likelihood of either of these happening is much reduced.
Mudguards keep you and your bike cleaner and dryer, especially on wet and muddy roads.
Rack mounts-Whether you use your bike to commute or to run errands, you’ll need a way to carry essentials, it very important to look for a rack mount. A rack provides a stable framework to hold items on your bicycle.
There are two types to look for
Rear rack- often used to carry larger or heavier items up to 50lbs.
Front rack- Offers an additional mounting spot for gear or essentials. It is an additional option after the rear rack as it adds weight to the bike’s front wheel which can affect steering and balance. Front racks are popular mostly with touring cyclists who carry large volumes of gear.
Frequently Asked Questions
How can I boost the performance of my cheap road bike?

To enhance your safety, you must always wear safety gear when cycling. Some of these gears include a helmet, cycling gloves, and a cycling jacket. How much should I spend on a cheap road bike?
If you’re a beginner or haven’t ridden in a while, looking for a road bike that will keep you safe while commuting then I recommend buying one between $300 and $500 but spending a little bit extra between $700 and $900 will get you a solid bike. It all depends on usage and preference but anything under $1000.
What to expect from a cheap road bike?

Choosing your road bike is a tricky task. It depends upon your requirements as well as how much you want to invest and how long do you expect your new bike to last. One of the popularities of road bikes is that technology and manufacturing companies are producing road bikes in great numbers and fitting them in today’s market.
Along with the quantity, not every company is providing the quality that is needed to enjoy biking for a longer period. However, there are still some companies that are providing bike lovers with such an amazing quality bike at entry-level prices, great for those interested in buying new road bikes.
The world is looking at the popularity of two wheels machines that is why companies are interested to build the best budget road bikes.
You can research and then look at my recommended top picks, you will always appreciate these amazing products as I have spent quite some time looking at the industry.
If you are thinking that you have to make some compromises when looking at the lower end of the budget scale, you are right in normal situations. However, all of the bikes recommended above are perfect for road biking beginners as well as professionals.
Additionally, it is your responsibility to take care of your road bikes because the life of the bike heavily depends upon the way you are using it.
So, take care of yourselves as well as your bikes and enjoy biking!
